2024 Bulldog Fall Fiesta
details
BFF will consist of a minimum of eight games for all teams in the standard 20/20 match format: Each game shall consist of two halves of ten tossups each, with each correct tossup followed by a three-part bonus. There are no math computation questions. Correct tossup answers are ten points each. Tossups are power-marked, and correct responses given before the mark will receive an additional five points. We will not assess a five-point penalty for interrupting the moderator during the tossup with an incorrect answer. All tossups and bonus parts receive five seconds. The moderator will prompt the captain on the bonus after four seconds. In the novice division, each incorrect bonus part will immediately rebound, with the rebounding team expected to provide an answer within three seconds. Bonus parts will not rebound in the varsity division. Unless otherwise specified in a bonus set, each bonus part shall be ten points each. In the event a game is tied after regulation, additional tossups shall be read until the next change in score. Each team shall have one 30 second timeout per match. Substitutions, scorechecks, and team conferences may occur at the half, prior to overtime, or during any timeout called by either team. Teams must use their timeout to request a scorecheck other than at halftime or the end of regulation. Team rosters shall be limited to seven players; schools are encouraged to bring multiple teams to compete. Teams may play with fewer than four players, but should have at least two players. Rosters shall be submitted in advance and finalized at registration the morning of the tournament. Players may not change teams during the tournament.
We will offer a varsity and novice division, with separate question sets. The Varsity division will use SHOW-M3, with more information about the set available at https://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27990. This set is also being used at tournaments hosted by Rockhurst in Kansas City, Glendale in Springfield, and Rushville-Industry in western Illinois. The Novice division will use PEACHES, with more information about the set available at https://hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=28131. Should you register for BFF, you agree to not attend any other tournament using either of these sets; conversely, if you are registered for or have already attended an event that uses either of these sets, you may not be allowed to compete at BFF.
We are currently limiting each division to 18 teams; this may be adjusted depending on staff availability. Additional teams will be placed on a waitlist and contacted should an opening occur.
We anticipate the varsity division serving as a qualifier for the 2025 PACE National Scholastic Championship in Chicago. The novice division will not serve as a qualifying division for national bids, as the following roster restrictions are in place: All freshmen are eligible to compete in the novice division. All sophomores are eligible to compete in the novice division, with the exception of players who averaged at least 20 points per game at HSNCT, SSNCT, or NSC. Juniors and seniors may compete in the novice division if they have not competed at a quiz bowl contest at the high school level prior to October 1st, 2024.
Teams will play five morning rounds, break for lunch, then return for at least three afternoon games. This setup is subject to change, depending on the number of teams signed up. We plan to start the team meeting at 8:30 a.m., with the first round set for 8:50 a.m. and afternoon rounds slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. With the exception of any playoff games for trophies, we anticipate the last game ending around 4 p.m.
Fee structure is as follows, per school: Each team: $70 Discount for travelling more than 100 miles each way (determined by Google Maps): $10 Discount for providing a working buzzer set: $5 Discount for providing a competent scorekeeper: $10 Discount for providing a competent moderator: $20 Discounts may be multiplied but may not exceed $35 per team. All discounts and staffing offers are subject to the discretion of tournament officials. Staff will need an active Google Drive account in order to access our scoresheets and question packets.
Mexico High School is located at 639 N Wade Street, in the northwestern part of the city. Plans are to have lunch available in the cafeteria. If you wish to venture off campus for lunch, most options will be along Highway 22 and in the downtown area.
The tournament is under the direction of Mexico High School Coach Dale Schenewerk and veteran scholar bowl moderator Kyle Hill of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance, an organization dedicated to promoting quality scholar bowl tournaments around the state. We anticipate receiving certification and assistance from their membership. Participants will be expected to abide by the Honor Pledge and Section I (Ethics and Conduct) promulgated by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE).
